The Plan – Key Aspects

The three key aspects of successful diet control are:
Balanced Meal StructureControlled Portion SizesOptimal Meal Timing

Let’s explore each of these…

Balanced Meal Structure
The term ‘balance’ is used a lot in the world of nutrition. What does it really mean? A balanced meal includes a combination of protein, starch, and a little fat, along with fruits and/or vegetables. Even on a weight loss plan, these components must be present to ensure healthy weight loss. In order for weight loss to occur, you may need to reduce your portion sizes of one or more of these components. In addition, it’s important to control the “extras” such as butter, oil, salad dressings, snack foods, candies, and desserts.

The Horizon Diet, developed by a registered dietician, provides all of the components necessary for good health. Your Horizon Diet includes the entrée component for lunch and dinner. By adding the other recommended meal components, according to a plan customized for your calorie level, we assemble a complete, balanced meal.

Controlled Portion Sizes
American portion sizes have gotten out of control, both at home and in restaurants. So, in addition to making the proper food selections, it is critical to your success at weight loss that you pay close attention to portion sizes. This means using measuring utensils (measuring cups, measuring spoons) as well as a food scale for the parts of the meal that you add to the entrée. While this step may seem cumbersome, much research has proven that we are poor judges of how much we’re eating. Why experiment? It’s best to really KNOW the size of each portion.

The Horizon Diet entrees are already portion-controlled. This takes care of one of the most difficult aspects of following a weight loss plan.

Optimal Meal Timing
The human body likes to be fed on a regular schedule. Even if your life is frantic, it really pays to heed your body’s need for regular fueling. On average, the body functions well on an every-four-hour feeding schedule. Because for many people the gap between lunch and dinner is the biggest between-meal gap, the Horizon Diet meal plans include an afternoon snack. This works for many dieters. However, when portions are cut for weight loss, the stomach may empty more quickly, which can lead you to feeling hunger sooner. If this happens to you, and the single snack doesn’t do it, try splitting the afternoon snack into two smaller snacks and use them at the times that you are most hungry. Alternatively, try saving the morning fruit and use that as a snack at some later time during the day.
